GROVE ART ONLINE
Grove Art Online is a comprehensive source of information for the visual arts. You can find biographical information on many artists, architects, and photographers. You can also find articles on artistic movements, styles and periods. In addition to these entries, you can also use Grove Art Online to find links to web sites or access images from museums and galleries.
How to Search
- Search: You can find a wealth of information simply by entering a search term, such as an artist's name or an art movement, in the text box located in the upper right corner of the screen. You can use either the artist's last name or both their first and last names, in any order.
- Advanced Search: By clicking on the link in the center of the screen, you can refine your search. Using this option you can choose:
- a concept search which uses words related to your search terms
- a pattern search to find variant spellings of your terms
- a Boolean search which allows you to string together several search terms. You can also specify that you want to search only full text, biographies or bibliographies
- Browse: Allows you to search an alphabetical list of all Grove Art articles.
- Explore: This option allows you to browse articles by category, such as Geography, Time Period, or Style. You can also combine categories to create a more relevant list of articles.
Article Features
Every article has a "Table of Contents" on the left side of the screen to help you quickly identify key information. Each entry also has a bibliographic list which you can use as a starting point for further research. At the end of each bibliography is a "How to Cite" link that explains how to properly cite information from Grove Art Online. In addition to the content, each Grove Art article provides access to a wealth of other resources. Depending on the article, you can easily find links to:
- Images: Many articles will provide links to related images. These links may be to museums, galleries, or other web sites, as well as the Bridgeman Image Library and Art Resource.
- Illustrations: This link provides quick access to images referred to in an article.
- Related topics: This is usually an extensive list of articles related to your topic. It can include information on other artists, movements, art forms, or terminology.
