INFOTRAC
With Infotrac you can search thousands of full-text articles and article citations on the subjects of business, biography, health information, contemporary literary criticism, general reference, social science, science, and technology.
If you have a library card from either Boston or Brookline Public Library you can access this from off campus. InfroTrac is actually a collection of a number of databases. All of the InfoTrac databases have the same search options and special features. Articles from all databases can also be printed or e-mailed.
Three of the most useful will probably be:
- General Reference Center Gold contains general interest articles from many newspapers, reference books, and periodicals/magazines.
- Expanded Academic ASAP contains more in-depth or academic articles from scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers.
- Biography Resource Center contains full-text, biographical articles from reference books and periodicals.
InfoTrac defaults to a subject search, but you can also choose to do Keyword, Relevance. Journal, or Advanced searches as well. These options are located on the left side of the screen.
- Subject Guide Search Browse subjects, people, organizations, products, and locations similar to keywords you have entered in the textbox.
- Relevance Search Use this search to find articles relevant to keywords you have entered in the textbox.
- Keyword Search Use this particular search to locate specific keywords within article text or citation information.
- Advanced Search Use this search when you want to locate information by a particular index (title, author, date, etc.) or by an expression (e.g., love AND hate)
- Journal Search Use this search to find journal titles similar to keywords entered in the textbox
Regardless of the type of search you choose, you can refine your search by limiting the results to only Full Text articles, or articles from a specific date range or journal.
InfoTrac also keeps a track of your search history of all searches executed during your current session. This helps you keep track of your search strategy and repeat searches if necessary.
The Biography Resource Center also allows you to search by:
- Name Contains Search for an individual's biography based on part of their name
- Start of Last Name Search for an individuals' biography based on the start of their last name
- Biographical Facts Search Search for a biography by name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, gender, birth year, death year, birth place, death place, or picture/no picture Results will find be sorted into the following categories: Narrative Biographies, Thumbnail Biographies, Marquis Who's Who (if applicable), Magazine Articles, and Websites. Many entries also include a picture of the individual.
