WHAT'S IN THE LIBRARY
Using the Catalog
You can use find out what books, videos and audio CDs the library owns by searching the catalog. You can also find out what magazines we subscribe to and what is on Course Reserve. You can do this by doing a keyword or Quick Search by typing a word or a phrase in the text box that appears on the screen. Click on the "Search" icon, located on the right side of the screen, and the computer will search the entire catalog for any instance of that term(s), no mater which field it appears in. To search by author's last name or part of a title simply click on that icon.
By clicking on the icon in the upper-right corner, you can also do an Advanced Search on the Library's holdings. Advanced searching lets you be more specific in what you search. You can specify the specific field(s) you want to search, such as title, author, subject, or call number. You can also use "and", "or", or "not" to include or exclude certain search terms.
The results of you search will be a list showing the title, author and call number of the work. You can move through the list by using either the "next" or "back" links in the bottom left corner of the screen or the "Previous", "Next", or "Go To" arrows in the top right corner. You can also sort your results by author, call number, title or any other field by clicking the "sort" icon.
To revise your original search you can click on the "Go Back" arrow or the "Start Over" button, both in the upper right corner o the screen. You can also click on the "Help" icon if you're having trouble.
To find out more about a specific title simply click on the title and its catalog record will appear in the screen. There is a lot of information contained in a catalog record, such as the publication date, ISBN number, additional cataloging notes, and the physical description.
One of the most useful pieces of information, however, contained in the catalog record is the subject classification(s) of a work. All subject classifications are hyperlinked, which means if you click on a term the catalog will generate a list of all other library materials that share that subject classification.
Call Numbers
The NEiA Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. By breaking down the subject of a work into a standardized format, the LC system forms the call numbers that help us organize our collection. Once you understand this format, you can use it to easily find what you need.
